Why It Doesn't Work
Appearance has a hierarchy, with assembly appearance taking precedence over part appearance. When your sub-assembly has an assembly appearance, it will override the part appearance. If your assembly appearance is overriding the part appearance, first use component acceleration to clear the appearance, then use shading to enhance the appearance.
